Over the weekend, UNLV men’s soccer held their home opener against UC San Diego. A last minute goal secured the win, and the Rebels advanced to 2-0 for the season.

After going scoreless in the first half, senior Nikolas Likulia scored the first goal of the game 10 minutes into the second half. This is his second overall goal this season.

Shortly after, the UC San Diego Triton Nick Cirrito answered back with a goal to tie the game.

The next 20 minutes would be a lot of moving up and down the field with no goals and little shot attempts. Lots of anticipation in the crowd was held as only minutes remained in the game, and the score was still 1-1.

In the last minute of the game, senior forward Aedon Kyra scored the game-winning goal to defeat the Tritons 2-1. The Rebels start the season 2-0 for the first time in three seasons.

The team would finish with six shots on goal, compared to the Tritons who only had two. Additionally, UNLV’s goalie Lukas Betz recorded one save during the second half.

The Rebels now head on a four-game road trip across California, they are set to play Saint Mary’s on Sept. 3. They will be back at UNLV to host the UC Irvine Anteaters on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
