Notebook: UNLV hockey ranked No. 2 in preseason poll

UNLV Hockey is ranked second in the nation in the American College Hockey Association (ACHA) in preseason rankings. 

The Skatin’ Rebels are coming off a 26-5-1 regular season in 2021-22. They reached the semifinals of the ACHA Division-I championship before falling to the University of Central Oklahoma.

Central Oklahoma is ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll. Defending national champions Lindenwood moved up to NCAA Division-I status for the season.

The Skatin’ Rebels received five first-place votes, along with Minot State. Central Oklahoma received seven.

The Skatin’ Rebels’ season starts on Saturday, Oct. 1 against the reigning NCAA Division-I National Champions, University of Denver.

The home opener series for the Skatin’ Rebels will be on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8 against Utah. The Friday game will be at the Dollar Loan Center Arena and the Saturday game will take place at the Lifeguard Arena. 

In the 2022 schedule, the Rebels will play against NCAA D-I University of Alaska of Anchorage three times. Two of those games will be on the road and one will be at home. The away games will be played on Oct. 14 and 15. The home game will be played on Nov. 16 at the Dollar Loan Center Arena.

Women’s Golf at New Mexico

UNLV women’s golf finished in a tie for 14th place at the Dick McGuire Invitational early last week in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Freshman Thienna Huynh shot a final round score of 72 to finish in a tie for 13th as the top-finishing Rebel in their opening tournament of the season. It was Huynh’s first collegiate tournament.

Ohio State won the tournament with an 11-under score (853) which was 10 strokes ahead of second-place Southern Methodist University. Kent State’s Mayka Hoogeboom won the individual tournament at 8-under (208).

The Rebels’ next tournament is the Blessings Collegiate Individual beginning Oct. 3 that is hosted by Arkansas.

Men’s Golf at Maui Jim Invitational

Junior men’s golfer Caden Fioroni finished in a tie for 17th place at the Maui Jim Invitational, hosted by Georgia State at the Mirabel Club, last weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Fioroni shot a 3-under (67) in the second and third round to finish the tournament with a score of 7-under. In their first tournament of the season, the Rebels finished in 16th place with a score of 5-over par (848).

Tennessee’s Caleb Surratt won the individual tournament with a score of 18-under (192). Auburn led the team leaderboard wire-to-wire, winning the tournament with a score of 45-under (795).

UNLV returns to the course to play at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico Sept. 23-24.
