HOUSTON, Texas — According to sources, the Holy Cross transfer, Matthew Sluka, will likely take the field as the starting quarterback for the Rebels during its week one matchup against the Houston Cougars.

Sluka, a senior standing at 6’3, will take the field for the Scarlet and Gray for the first time at an FBS program after playing four consecutive seasons of FCS football for the Crusaders.

The new face under center for the Rebels is seen as a dual threat to opposing defense as he can create offense with both his arm and his legs.

Sluka holds an NCAA Division 1 record for rushing yards in a single game with 330 against Lafayette in 2023 while finishing the year with a combined total of 1247 yards on the ground in 13 games.

Through the air, Sluka has posted 5896 passing yards in his career, with his career-high coming in 2022 when he recorded 2491 yards on 153 completions.

Most recently, Sluka recorded 1723 passing yards and 1243 yards on the ground for a combined total of 2966 in the 2023 season.

Along with moving the ball efficiently up and down the field, Sluka punched his ticket into the endzone 29 times last year, nine coming via the run.

If Sluka does lead the Rebels onto the field to begin the team’s 2024 campaign and second season under Head Coach Barry Odom, the UNLV offense will look to capitalize on his strengths on the field.

However, should the game begin to get away from Sluka, transfer Hajj Malik-Williams and longtime Rebel Cameron Friel are waiting in the wings for their opportunity to lead the Go Go Offense.
